Not all IP addresses are treated equally. Security systems draw a sharp line between residential traffic (real home and mobile connections) and datacenter traffic (servers, hosting, and most VPNs/proxies). Knowing which side your IP falls on explains a lot about why you do or don’t get blocked.

The fundamental difference

A residential IP is assigned by a consumer ISP to a real household or phone. A datacenter IP belongs to a hosting provider and lives in a server facility. Because the overwhelming majority of automated abuse — scraping, credential-stuffing, spam, bot traffic — comes from datacenters, security systems treat datacenter IPs with far more suspicion by default.

Why do datacenter IPs get blocked more?

Many websites maintain or subscribe to lists of datacenter and hosting IP ranges and simply challenge or block them, on the assumption that a real human visitor rarely browses from a server. This is why a commercial VPN (which uses datacenter IPs) often triggers CAPTCHAs or “access denied” pages that you never see on your home connection.

Why residential IPs are trusted — and abused

Residential IPs carry built-in trust because they map to real users. That trust is exactly why “residential proxy” services exist — they route traffic through real home connections to look legitimate. It’s also why a compromised home device is valuable to attackers: its trusted residential IP slips past filters a datacenter IP wouldn’t.

How can you tell which kind your IP is?

The network owner (ASN) reveals it. A consumer ISP name (Jio, Comcast, BT) indicates residential; a hosting company name (OVH, DigitalOcean, AWS) indicates datacenter. What this means in practice

If a VPN keeps getting you blocked, it’s because you’re on a datacenter IP — switching servers or providers to a less-flagged range often helps, though no datacenter IP is as trusted as a genuine residential one. If you run servers, expect your datacenter IP to face more scrutiny, and keep it scrupulously clean to avoid compounding the default suspicion.
