What a MAC address lookup tells you

A MAC address is a hardware identifier assigned to a network adapter. Its first half — the first six hex digits, called the OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier) — is registered to a manufacturer with the IEEE. This tool reads that prefix and tells you which company it belongs to. It identifies the maker of the network chip, which is often but not always the device’s brand — many gadgets use third-party Wi-Fi modules (you’ll see names like Espressif or Realtek on a lot of smart-home devices).

Found an unknown device on your network?

Seeing an unfamiliar entry in your router’s device list is usually harmless — it’s typically a phone, smart plug, TV, or speaker you forgot about. Look up its MAC here to see the maker, then match that against your devices. The honest reassurance: a stranger can’t join your Wi-Fi without the password, so an unknown device is far more likely to be your own than an intruder. To be sure, change your Wi-Fi password — that disconnects everything and lets you re-add only your own devices.

Why some addresses show no vendor (randomized MACs)

Modern phones deliberately use randomized MAC addresses for privacy — iPhones since iOS 14 and Android since version 10 do this by default. A randomized address isn’t registered to any manufacturer, so a “no vendor found” result is normal and expected, not a sign of anything suspicious. You can spot a randomized (locally-administered) address by a specific bit in its first byte; this tool flags it for you when it sees one.
