What a WebRTC leak is

WebRTC is a browser feature for real-time voice and video. To connect peers efficiently, it can reveal your device’s IP addresses directly to a website — including your real public IP, even when you’re connected to a VPN. Because this happens at the browser level, outside the VPN tunnel, the VPN doesn’t mask it. This test runs entirely in your browser and shows you what WebRTC exposes.

Reading your result

Seeing private addresses (10.x, 172.16–31.x, 192.168.x) or a masked .local name is harmless — those are local-network addresses, not your identity. The problem is seeing your real public IP while a VPN is on: that means the VPN is leaking and a website could identify your true address despite the VPN.

How to fix a leak

If your real public IP appears with a VPN active, enable the VPN’s WebRTC- or leak-protection setting, or disable WebRTC in your browser. The exact steps differ by browser — Brave has a built-in control, Firefox uses a single about:config toggle, and Chrome/Edge need an extension. Re-run this test afterward to confirm the leak is sealed.
