Round-trip time (RTT) is how long a small request takes to travel from your browser to our server and back. It’s a direct read on your connection’s responsiveness — lower is better. We measure it honestly by timing a series of tiny requests and reporting the median, so a single hiccup doesn’t skew the result.
Jitter is how much the round-trip time varies between measurements. A low, steady RTT means a stable connection; high jitter means latency is bouncing around, which causes lag in games and stutter in video calls even when your raw speed looks fine. If your average is good but jitter is high, that instability — not bandwidth — is usually what you’re feeling.
This measures at the browser level, so the number includes a little HTTP overhead on top of pure network latency — it reads slightly higher than a terminal ping. We warm the connection first and report the median to get as close to true network RTT as a browser honestly can. It’s a relative, repeatable read on your connection, not a substitute for ICMP ping.
We don’t show a fake “route” with invented intermediate hops — a browser genuinely can’t see the routers between you and us, so any tool claiming to is guessing. This shows only what’s real: the measured round-trip to our node, and how much it varies.
