Does Tor completely scrub your identity?
Tor is the strongest mainstream tool for hiding your IP — but “hides your IP” and “completely scrubs your identity” are not the same thing. Here’s an honest account of what Tor does and where it stops.
How Tor hides your IP
The Tor network routes your traffic through three volunteer relays, each peeling one layer of encryption (hence “onion routing”). The site you reach sees the final relay — the exit node — not you. No single relay knows both your identity and your destination. Load our homepage through the Tor Browser and you’ll see the exit node’s IP and country, never your own. For IP-level anonymity, this is excellent.
Why does Tor slow down your connection?
That three-relay path adds distance and latency, so Tor is noticeably slower than a direct connection or a VPN — fine for browsing, poor for streaming or large downloads. The slowdown is the cost of the routing that provides the anonymity.
Where Tor does NOT scrub your identity
Tor hides your IP; it doesn’t make you anonymous if you undermine it. Logging into a personal account, giving real details, or enabling identifying scripts links the session straight back to you regardless of Tor. Browser fingerprinting (see canvas fingerprinting) can also identify your device — which is why the Tor Browser standardises its fingerprint so all users look alike, and why you shouldn’t resize the window or install extra add-ons that make you distinguishable.
The exit-node caveat
Traffic between the exit node and a non-HTTPS destination can be observed by whoever runs that exit node. Always use HTTPS sites over Tor so that final hop is encrypted. The exit node sees where you’re going but, with HTTPS, not the contents.
Your local footprint
Tor hides your activity from your ISP and the sites you visit, but the fact that you’re using Tor can be visible to your ISP (a bridge can hide even that). And anything you save, download, or do outside the Tor Browser isn’t protected. Tor anonymises the Tor Browser’s traffic, not your whole machine.
The honest summary
Tor gives you strong IP-level anonymity and is the best free option for it. But complete anonymity also requires disciplined behaviour (no logins to real identities), accepting the speed cost, and pairing it with anti-fingerprinting — which the Tor Browser is specifically built to provide. Used as designed, it’s powerful; used carelessly, it’s easy to deanonymise yourself.
