Bad IP reputation on shared hosting, and how to audit it

On shared hosting, your website shares one server IP with dozens or hundreds of other sites. That means you also share their reputation — and if a neighbour misbehaves, your email and deliverability can suffer for reasons entirely outside your control. Here’s how to audit the situation.

Why are shared IPs a reputation risk?

Mail servers and security systems judge traffic by IP. When one site on a shared IP sends spam, hosts malware, or gets compromised, the whole IP’s reputation drops — and every site on it inherits the penalty. Your legitimate email can start landing in spam because of a site you’ve never heard of on the same address.

Step 1: Find your server’s IP

Check your hosting control panel, or do a DNS lookup of your domain — our Reverse DNS tool resolves a domain or IP and shows the hostname behind it. Note that if your site sits behind Cloudflare, you’ll see Cloudflare’s IP, not your true origin; check your host’s panel for the real server address.

Step 2: Audit the IP’s reputation

Step 3: Identify whether it’s you or a neighbour

If your own site is clean — no compromised scripts, no spammy mailers — but the shared IP is listed, the cause is a neighbour. You can confirm by checking whether your sending domain’s authentication (SPF, DKIM) passes while the IP itself is flagged: that split points at the shared address, not your domain.

What can you actually do about it?

You can’t delist an IP you share with others. Your real options are: ask your host to investigate and clean the offending account, request migration to a different (cleaner) IP, move to a dedicated IP if your host offers one, or for email specifically, route outbound mail through a transactional email service with its own reputation. A dedicated IP puts your reputation back in your own hands.
