Why does my IP show the wrong location or city?
You check your IP and it says you’re in a city you’ve never visited — sometimes a different state or country. This is normal, common, and not a sign anything is broken. Here’s why IP geolocation gets your location wrong.
Geolocation guesses; it doesn’t track
IP geolocation works by mapping an address to where its owner registers or routes it — not your GPS position. Databases match your IP to your ISP’s records, which often point to a regional hub, the ISP’s head office, or the city where that block of addresses was allocated. None of that is your living room.
Why is the city so often wrong?
Several things push the guess away from your real location: your ISP routes traffic through a regional gateway in another city; you’re on mobile data, which aggregates through carrier hubs; your IP block was reassigned from a different region; or the geolocation database simply hasn’t been updated. Country is usually right; city is a best guess and frequently wrong by a long way.
Mobile and CGNAT make it worse
On mobile networks, your traffic exits through carrier gateways that can be hundreds of kilometres away, so your IP may geolocate to a different city or state entirely. The same applies to ISPs using carrier-grade NAT, where many customers share addresses routed through central points.
VPNs and proxies (deliberately wrong)
If you use a VPN, the location shown is the VPN server’s — that’s the whole point. Occasionally even that lags, because the database has the server’s IP mapped to a stale location. Switching servers usually corrects it.
When it actually matters — and doesn’t
For most things, a wrong city is harmless. It matters when a service uses your IP for regional content or fraud checks and gets it wrong (see streaming account locks and payment gateway geolocation). Check what your IP reports on our homepage — if the country is right and only the city is off, everything is working as designed.
If the city above looks wrong, you can check exactly how far off it is. This compares your IP’s mapped coordinates with your device’s actual GPS location. Your browser will prompt for permission first, and the coordinates are used only in your browser to measure the distance — they are never sent to us or stored anywhere.
