What is a residential proxy?
“Residential proxy” comes up constantly in scraping, ad verification, and privacy discussions — usually contrasted with regular VPNs and datacenter proxies. Here’s what one actually is, why it’s valued, and the important legal and ethical line around it.
The basic definition
A residential proxy routes your traffic through a real consumer device on a home internet connection, so the destination sees a genuine residential IP — one assigned by an ISP to a household — rather than your own address or a datacenter IP. The appeal is that residential IPs carry built-in trust, since they look like ordinary home users.
Why do residential proxies beat datacenter ones?
As covered in datacenter vs residential blocklists, security systems treat datacenter IPs (regular VPNs, hosting) with suspicion because so much automation comes from them — so they get blocked and CAPTCHA’d more. A residential IP sidesteps that suspicion, which is exactly why commercial services sell access to them for tasks that need to look like organic traffic.
VPN vs residential proxy
A consumer VPN gives you the VPN provider’s datacenter IP — cheap, fast, but easily flagged as a VPN. A residential proxy gives you a home-user IP — more trusted, but slower, pricier, and drawn from real people’s connections. They serve different goals: VPNs for privacy and security; residential proxies for appearing as an ordinary local user.
The ethical and legal line
Here’s the part to take seriously. Many residential proxy networks source their IPs from real people’s devices — sometimes through SDKs bundled into free apps where users may not fully realise their connection is being resold. Using such a network can mean routing your traffic through someone’s home connection without their meaningful consent, and the activity exits under their IP. That raises genuine consent and liability questions, and using proxies to break site terms or laws doesn’t become acceptable because the IP looks residential.
